A fictional parable by Peter Pickering.
A misty garden at dawn. The scent of jasmine. The sound of a shutter. Grasshopper kneels with his camera, perplexed.
Grasshopper
Sensei… may I ask something without dishonour?
Sensei
You already did. Ask again, but slower.
Grasshopper
Is… is Snap really your name?
Sensei pauses. The wind rustles the bamboo.
Sensei
No. That was a nickname… given long ago by monks too slow to dodge my lens.
I was always snapping. Always chasing light. So they called me Snap-san. It stuck — like grain to film.
But now you are ready to know the name I was born into.
Grasshopper
I am listening, Sensei.
Sensei
My true name… is Kagemori.
Shadow Keeper.
Grasshopper
Kage…mori?
Sensei
Yes. I walk in the light, but I protect the shadows. I do not take photos. I receive them.
Remember this, Grasshopper: names fade, but the moment remains.
