A fictional parable by Peter Pickering.
Sensei once stood before a student’s photo —
a pristine alleyway, crisp light, balanced tones…
and yet, Sensei said nothing.
Only stared, then yawned.
Grasshopper
But Sensei, the light! The geometry!
Sensei
Yes. Beautiful geometry.
But it is like a perfectly made bed in a hotel with no guests.
Where is life?
Street photography without life is taxidermy.
It may be sharp…
it may be technically perfect…
but it is dead.
No gesture, no waiting breath, no cigarette burn on the moment’s hem.
A street scene with no sign of humanity is not street photography —
It’s architecture.
Even a shadow, a footprint, a drifting plastic bag can whisper of presence.
A twitch of curtain.
A smudge of motion.
A story teased, not told.
So, Grasshopper:
Do not just photograph the street.
Photograph the echo of people
…or better still, their heartbeat.
